St Mary’s Alumnae Match Report
St Mary’s hosted a fun alumnae hockey match versus the current 1st XI team last Sunday 17th November. The nervousness of both teams at the start was apparent as the current St Mary’s girls’ team looked at the alumnae team with a mixture of fear and trepidation, whilst the alumnae team looked back and wondered where the years had gone since they were that age!
The match was dynamic with quick passing from both teams and fierce defending from Lottie in goal for St Mary’s girls’ team, keeping out a few on-target strikes. Emma Russell (née Rowland Jones) found the back of the net with an aerial shot which astounded spectators and players. She has not lost any of her brilliance! It was 2-0 to the alumnae at half time after a second goal from Emily Lewis at a short corner. St Mary’s girls pulled a goal back in the final quarter from Katie L, also from a deflection at a short corner. The current 1st team fought back showing supreme fitness in the final quarter and nearly equalised on several occasions with goalkeeper Steph Kalber (née Gibbons) showing her phenomenal ability and being tested on more than one occasion (she played 3 hockey matches this weekend only conceding 1 goal!).
With outstanding alumnae performances from sisters in the families of Rowland Jones, Ashley, Munro, six members from 2012 leavers, four from 2015 and various year groups above and below, the spectators were kept entertained by the determination and prowess of both teams.
Dee Webb, Head of Alumnae, said: “Thank you to all those who travelled so far for the event and to all the parents who came back to the sidelines to support their daughters! Thank you also to Mr and Mrs Butt for umpiring and to Mr and Mrs Dalton for organising the St Mary’s girls’ team. We were also thrilled to have Miss (Jean) Walker and Mrs (Katy) Booth there to support both teams. We look forward to making this an annual event and hope to arrange a netball match next year.”
